Peer Assessment

This is the peer assessment that people in my class done about my blog so far. in both of the picture I have been given a level 4 from Both of my peers. This is done to what i one well in my post and that is 'lots of detail in each post with a clear layout which makes it easier to understand each post', and the other was that I used great imagery in my posts.

Audience Research 2

In My question I asked 10 simple questions to people in order to help me when it come to planning what my music video is going to to be like. Firstly I started with 3 questions about the demographic of the people answering the question with questions like age, gender and ethnicity.

I was happy about the gender of people that analysed the questionnaire because there were an even amount of people from each gender answering the questionnaire.

The age of people however had much more of a difference between people answer the questionnaire because the 83% of people that answered the questionnaire was aged 16-21, 17% of people were 22+ and 0% were aged 11-15.

The ethnicity of people however were much more spread however there were the majority of white British people filling out the questionnaire.

The next questions that I asked in the questionnaire were about general things like people favourite genre of music. The results came back quiet useful because I had a range of answers from people who liked different types of music. 42% of people like preferred hip hop and 25% of people preferred Rock and since thats the genre that I am going it was good for me to be able to see what Rock music fans like to see in their video's.

In today's world technology has become so advanced there are thousands of ways people consume music, it used to be just through Cd but since the internet was invented and sites like youtube and i tunes came about that quickly changed. So the next question I asked was 'How do you consume your music'. I was not surprised to see that the majority of people Consume their music through youtube since that is today most popular way of getting to listen to music because of the amount of songs that are on youtube. 17% of people listen to radio and 8% of people either buy from a shop or buy from I tunes.

Since Im making a music video I thought it was relevant to ask people if they think that a music video can change their mind on weather they like a song or not. 75% of people Said that they think that a music video can change their mind on weather they like a music video or not. One of the answers i thought was very useful as to why this is the case was:

'"If the video is dynamic, fun, interesting. If it challenges stereotypes (e.g. hip hop videos often portray women as objects, and this does not challenge stereotypes) if it represents the feel of the music video well.

If it is well filmed and clever. Makes you stop and think (like The Unit video London Riots)"'

I though this was a very insightful answer to the question very detailed and I will definately take this is into account when making my music video because I agree with everything that the person has said in this music video. Especially since i have seen 'The Unit - London Riot' music video and I can tell what they mean.

Since I am doing rock I though I should ask a rock specific question, so I asked a simple question 'Do you listen to rock music'. I had a 50/50 response to the question, and then I asked what makes people 'What do you like most in your favortie artist or band?'. Most people had good answers to the questions and one person said that they like the persona of the people in the bands.

Since the questionnaire is for my music video's I asked, ' What type of music video people like watch'. 58% of people said that they preferre a mixture of performance and story within the video. I was shocked at this answer because in my opinion I preferre a story line in a video because you get the mixture of good music and also a short film which is more likely to reduce viewer fatigue. 33% of people said that they preferre a video with just a story line in it and 8% of people said that they preferre a traditonal artist performing to the camera and 0% of people prerrer like other types of music video's. As you can see video's with storylines are very popular and I am likely to use a video with both shots of the band and a story within the video as well.

The next question that I decied to ask people was ' What do they expect to see in a Rock music video?'. I got some in sightful answers from some of the people watching the questionnaire, and some of the conventions of a Rock music video, like 'Dark gothic colours', and I am likely to inclde some of these things in my music video.

Audience Research 1

I asked a series of question in order to help me get ideas on the type of video that I should do. I asked 10 questions and they consisted of:

1.What age are you?

2.What ethnicity are you?

3.What is your Favourite Genre of music?

4.How Do you Consume your music?

5.Do you listen to rock music?

6.If yes, what do you like the most in your favourite band or artist?

7.What type of music video do you like watch?

8.What do you expect to see in a 'Rock' music video?

9.Do you think a music video can change your mind on if you like a song or not?

10.If yes, what makes you think that?

Analyse 3 music magazine adverts from your chosen genre

In this magazine they are promoting and album made by a band called 'Opeth'. This particular advertisement would be seen as a synergy because it is promoting more than one product one being the band themselves 'Opeth' and secondly 'HMV' a music store. This particular advert has various properties that are typical of magazine adverts generalised around HMV.

  • Band members
  • Dark clothing and lighting
  • Long shot of band
  • Vocalists stands out
  • Album cover
  • Band Name
  • Release date
  • Price
  • Shows ways of buying album
  • Illustrative Language
  • HMV Logo
  • Small print
  • Album has been Reviewed
  • Reviewers Name
  • Album cover Matches Picture

I am analysing the advertisement at the bottom of the page, it is an advertisement for a band called 'Lost Alone' for their release of their album 'Say No To The World'. In this advertisement it has different qualities to some other advertisements.
  • Album Cover makes up the background of the advertisement
  • No black
  • Artists are not shown the advertisement
  • Review quotes of the album
  • Name of featured artists on the advertisement
  • Tour dates
  • Illustrative Language

This advertisement is for a band named 'Staind' and it is promoting their album. This advertisement is also a synergy with the HMV because it is promoting two different things. This particular advert is similar to the 'Opeth' one that we saw earlier and has some of the same properties.
  • Contrast of colours (Black and White)
  • Dark clothes
  • Mid-Close up
  • Album Cover
  • Advertisement matches the album cover (Album cover matches picture of band)
  • Band Name
  • Album Name
  • Release Date
  • Price
  • Shows ways to get it
  • Small Print
  • Illustrative Language
  • HMV Logo
All these advertisements are promoting different things for example one have tour dates and others have different qualities. However one things that they do have in common is that they are promoting their album and they use Illustrative language in order to try and further convince people to buy the album.

The brief

I am going to do a promotion package for the release of an album for a 'Rock' band.

In order to do this I am going to have to make a promotional video a cover for a release as part of a digipak (CD/DVD package) and a magazine advertisement for the digipak (CD/DVD package).

Record Label research

The first record that I am going to talk about is 'J Records'. 'J Record is an American record label that is owned and operated by Sony Music Entertainment although based in the US. This record label was founded in 2000 by a man named Clive Davis, with $150 million financing from BMG (Bertelmann Music Group).

In 2001 the company saw it's first multi-platinum album sales, selling 12 million copies world wide from the debut album of Alica keys. In 2002 BMG bought a big part of 'J Records', and that same year J Records were working under the RCA Music Group, where the founder Mr Davis was appointed CEO. Since then the Label saw success from several artists such as Jamie Foxx, Monica, Pitbull, Jazmine Sullivan and many more.

GUN Records (Great Unlimited Noises), was founded in 1992 and it founder was Bogdan Kopec and Wolfgang Funk. The record Label is located in  Bochum, Northrhine-Westphalia, Germany. 'GUN Records' Parent company is Sony Music Entertainment, however in 2005 a part of GUN records 'Supersonic Records' closed down when their parent company BMG announced it was mering with Sony. Sadly in 2009 GUN records announced it was closing.

However while Gun records was alive and operating they had artists that were singed to the label release singles and album around Europe whilst they were operating. Gun records based  had artists that based their music around the genre of Alternative Rock and Heavy Metal Rock. The former Artists That were signed to the label consist of artist like Die Happy, Flyleaf, Lordi, Lovex and may more.

RoadRunner Records is an American label, that bases the music music it releases from the genre's of mainly heavy metal and death metal. It parent company at the moment is currently Warner Music Group. RoadRunner Records was founded in 1980 and its founder was Cees Wessels, and it was firstly based in the Netherlands. Road Runners firstly started importing North American Rock groups in Europe. In 1986 RoadRunner open it's US based office in New York City, and later opened several other offices in the UK, Germany, France, Japan, Australia, Denmark and Canada.

RoadRunner distributers is Atlantic Records Group, and throughout the time that RoadRunner records have been operating they have seen several artists that were signed to the label see success in the music industry. It's early successes came from album's from King Diamond and Annihilation. Since then they saw much of their artist get into the mainstream artist like Sepultura and Type O Negative in 1990. Sepultura's album became the first RoadRunner band top get in to the top 40 Billboard album chart. RoadRunner success and expertise was noticed after they got voted June on 11, 2008, Roadrunner Records was voted as the "Best Metal Label" by Metal Hammer at their Golden Gods Awards, an award that it has won the past four years in a row.

Since they have been operational RoadRunner records have signed Several artists such as Opeth, Slash, Staid, Murderdolls, Rob zombies and the list goes.

Album cover research

This album cover is an extremely simple yet effect screen album cover, this is done mainly through the Mise En Scene. Firstly the alive women is physically dragging out her insides and she is dressed in black and looks as if she is at a funeral, maybe she is at her own funeral. Things like that appeals to people who listen  to rock music because they like dark weird stuff like this.
Another thing that is interesting about this album cover is the juxtaposition, between the sweet innocent girl holding her guts. It is weird and twisted yet makes sense because of the type of genre the music is and the lyrics would probably suit this picture. I say this because the picture could tell you what the album itself is going to be like and it also represents the artists because they chose not to put themselves in the cover and that may be symbolic of themselves. This is also apparent with the white background and the black dress may have a symbolic meaning. It may represent the band because they even though they are a rock band they look like normal people, which is shown through the white, the things they say in their songs lyrics the dark gory stuff maybe represented through the girl and her dark dress and her insides.
The picture also compliments the name of the album 'Suicide Season'. This is because in the picture the girl seems to be committing suicide, looks as though she should be dead but she has this blank expression in her face. Apart from the blood and guts she seems clean and tidy every where else which may suggest that there is more to her that you, don't know and This may be a metaphor for the artist or the album.
The text in the picture is also not that visual and this may have been done for various reason. One reason being that they wanted the majority of the attention to be on the girl, so the picture of her could be clear so it could raise questions and interest. The other reason is maybe because it connotates with what the titles actually says 'Suicide', I say this because when people are going to committee suicide it is not always clear and sometimes you have to look closer to see what is actually happening.

Like most album covers artists want their one to stand out, and they can do this through various ways. In this case 'Kings Of Leon' have chosen to use 4 separate profile pictures intertwined with and Eagle. The album cover is split into for parts, with four face on close up pictures of each member in the band. This may have been done in order to show that there are four members in the band, and unlike some other 'Rock' bands they have chosen to show their faces in order to create a certain affect.
This affect was created by the editing done on the picture. The fact that there are four pictures lets people viewing the cover know that the band are made of four individuals. Although in this case the picture has been editing is a very unique way because only a corner of each band member face has been taken to create what seems like on face. They may have done this to show even though the band is made of four individuals, they together make the 'Kings of Leon', one band, one sound one group; and this is shown cleverly through the combination of the Mise En Scene and cinematography of the picture.
The dark lighting of the picture is something that is common of most things that anyone does if they are associated in the 'Rock' genre. However this connotates with the name of the album 'Only By The Night'. I say that because a sort of night time affect has been given to this cover through the colouring of the whole picture. It seems as though it is being looked at through 'Night' vision goggles. Although I think that they Have done this in order to make it seem as though your are looking through the Eagles eyes at 'Night' and that is how they cleverly intertwined to eagle in the picture because it has relevance to the overall affect of the album cover itself.
The last thing that i am going to comment on is the size of titles on the album cover. As you can see they only take up the top corners of covers and does not obstruct any of the picture, this has been done because it fits best there and they maybe don't want the message of the album cover to been miss understood in anyway shape or form .

The last album cover is from Green Day. I think that this album cover again fits in with other 'Rock' Album covers because of how creative it is and the messages that it holds. In this case the colour Green normally associated with peace, fair trade ECT. However in case they have chosen to make the bands name 'Green Day' stand out. They have done this through the size of it and also the black background and the actual 'Green Day' being in white so it stands out that bit more.

They also named the album after one of their most successful songs 'American Idiot'. This is very clever because they have an animated hand holding a grenade. This has various meanings because The American army have been known for extremely stupid at recent wars by doing things like friendly fire basically acting like 'idiots'.  So The name 'Green Day' contradicts against the animation in this picture because it absolutely goes against what 'Green' represents. This is taken further by the name of the album 'American Idiot' because it shows and matches exactly what the media says the American army are doing at war.

Since the cover is based around the American army, people looking at the cover know that the album itself may be quiet violent. That may include strong language and concept that under aged children shouldn't be listening to. However it is known that is should have parental guidence before letting children listening to this album and this is shown through the 'Parental advisory' sign.

conventions of a music video in my chosen genre

Cinematography

The cinematography in 'Rock' genre sometimes becomes repetitive. This is due to the type of  music it is they need a plethora of  shots the match upbeat tempo of the music and the raw sound of the instruments. In Rock the video usually have a lot of close up's and mid shots of the instruments in the video, this is order to indicate to the audience watching the video that ban is playing the video live. There is normally dark lighting in the shots that they take in the video because the audience the normally watch the video like weird, unusual dark things.

Mise En Scene

The Mise En Scene in 'Rock' Video is like some that you would not find in other genre's Due to content of what the songs are about. In most video's The band are always shot in an area that gives the impression that the band are playing by themselves with nothing but the members and their instruments. For example you would see some of the bands in the woods being filmed or in an empty warehouse, always interesting location to make up fior the fact that the shot may not be seen as that interesting. Other conventions of rock music video's is that they would have random shots of things that you may not think has anything to do with the video however it has a bigger meaning behind it that nay not obvious at first. An example of this would be a lonely boy walking through, or a someone chasing a chicken video or maybe the artist acting throughout the whole video telling a story to the viewer.

Editing

The editing of the video's in Rock is like most music video's. They tend to use short, sharp cutting through shots and they do this as a good way of reducing viewer fatigue, so people do not get bored wehn watching the video. Other editing techniques that have been used in som Rock music video is animantion in video's. They use thing an easy, interesting and unique way of making the video new and interesting way of shooting music video's. Someone that is famous for using animations in music video's is the 'Gorillaz'.

Sound

The sound of most Rock video is very obvious that it is a Rock song. This is due to the conventional instruments that theu use when they make the song. They use tradition instruments that theyu use Such as Electric guitars, Bass Guitars and Drums amke the typical rock sound that could not be mistaken for any other genre of music. Sometimes in their songs they get artist from different genre to get people who dont normally listen to the songs to listen to and potentially buy the song.

Music Analysis From my chosen Genre

Video 1

Bring Me The Horizon - The Sadness Will Never End

Cinematography

Cinematography in this song in particular is random, they use various shots but none in order, I think is to create a dramatic effect to the video and this in turn mimics portrays the lyrics in a visual way.

The cinematography in this video is also very creative because in certain shots you can't see much. So I think the video makers done this to generate feelings and evoke emotion from the viewer watching the video since it is about 'Sadness'.

Mise En Scene

In this video it is apparent that they have put some thought in to the Mise En Scene. I say this because they have used a cut away throughout the video of a small, lonely, sad boy which connotates with the rest of the video.

The band are also in a very interesting setting of the woods which also adds to the small boy which makes him adds to the idea of an lonely boy which makes the idea pf him being in the video more effective.

There is the typical shot of the band in the woods as well, this is something that is common in most rock music videos. They put them in there so the fans an audience that are watching the video have the impression that the people in sots with all the drums and guitars are actually playing that song in the woods at the moment.

Editing

The editing of this video is very typical of rock music videos. This is because even though they ere in quiet a well light area who ever edited the video put a colour over some of the shots to again give thee traditional; dark feel to the video.

Sound

The Sound of this songs is typical of the genre. I say this because it holds all the ingredients that it needs in order for it to be a acceptable in the rock genre. It does this through the rebellious, loud  and unique lyrics that most rocks songs have, and also the the backing instrumental that the band made themselves with the Electric guitars, drums ECT.

Performance

The peformance of the people in this video is typical of the people in rock music videos. This is done through the band playing their instruments in a what seems like an un humanised place.

Another way they have done this is through the actor they have hired to give the video a crazy edge to it, and it also helps that he connotates and compliments the concept of the song extremely well.

Video 2

Bring Me The Horizon - Pray For Plagues

Cinematography

This is a video done by the same group as before, However the cinematography in this video is much different to the last. It differs in various ways such as in this video there are a lot of Mid shots, Close ups. I think this was done to suit the type of video it is because the is a lot of animations in it Close ups and mid shots are needed so the audience can get the full feel of the animations in the video itself, and also to add a jumpy, dark, scary feel to the video also.

Mise En Scene

The mise en scene in this video is extremely unique due to the graphics and animation that have been used in the video. The graphics and animations have emphasized certain parts giving the performance and lyrics more meaning and purpose.

That have also incorporated one of the artist playing instruments this is common in a lot of rock music video. They do this in all rock music video and this is one of the main conventions of a music video in this genre. There is also the dark lighting in this video that is also another main convention of a rock music video.

Editing

The editing in this video is common of most music videos of all genres with the fast pace cutting throughout the video, as a way of stopping viewer fatigue.

They have also added a dark lighting to some of the shots as well to create the isolated look to some of the shots and make it seem like there is just one person fully surrounded by darkness.

Sound

The sound of this video is extremely typical of a music video, I say this because in the rock genre most artist do not sing their lyrics but they tend to scream as it has been a part of the rock culture for years and also as a way of expressing themselves.

The sound in this video however the sound is very 'Hard CORE' rock this is due to the high volume of the instruments and the pace they are being played at.

Performance

The performance of the artist in this song is vitally important because of the type of music video it is the arists needed to do everything according to plan in order for the animations to work properly.

The performance of the artist also need to mimic the energy and meaning the the lyrics they were saying had as well and they did very well when it came down to this.

Video 3

Kings Of Leon - Sex On Fire

Cinematography

In this video they have the to typical dark lighting throughout the video. In many rock video they use dark lighting and this is because it appeals to the people that listen to this type of music, so they are thinking about their audience by doing this.

They also use a variety of shots throughout the video and they have done this so that they can keep the video new and interesting, in order to reduce viewer fatigue. However they have used mainly close ups for the beginning of the first verse, and they were able to do that because the shots that were used were all interesting so that is also reducing viewer fatigue.

They have also done something that is common in rock video which is that they have taken random shots of a chicken. some people may not think that has anything to do with the song or video but it may have a deeper meaning that is apparent at first.

Mise En Scene

In this video there is a lot of acting throughout the video. This is something that a lot of music video have this is because acting is an extremly good way of entertaining people and reducing viewer fatigue.

Also there are a lot of random cut aways of random things like paper blowing, this may have been to mix up the shots a bit or maybe it has a meaningful message behind it.

There are also the conventional shots of the instruments in the video among all the other shots that are being used as well. This is also another one of the main conventions of a music video.

Editing

The editing in this video is typical of most music video it has quiet fast pace, in order to try and reduce viewer fatigue. The fast pace editing has also allowed the acting in the video to fit in and match what is going on i the song.

In this video also the dark lighting has been used as well and this is common is most 'Rock' genre music videos, and this is because people who generally listen to these types of video's like dark, gory unusual things.

Sound

The sound of this song is much less 'Hard Core' than certain types of rock song. This songs in particular could qualify for another genre for various reasons. One being the instrumental although it is rock could be used an accepted in genres like 'RnB' or 'hip hop' because of the song suttle sound to it. The other reason is that the vocalist is singing the lyrics in stead of shouting them like some other rock songs, he sings which is not always common in rock songs but the husky sound to his voice fits in perfectly.

Performance

The performance of the artists in this song is crucial for various. One of the reasons being that they have to entertain people who would be watching the video in their performance shots where they have instruments or lip synching.

The other reason is that the artist that made the song are actually acting in it also, so they are performing in several ways.

Video 4

Kasabian - Days Are Forgotten

Cinematography

In this video they have also used a kind of animation to add to the video. They may have done this as one way of reducing viewer fatigue, however they have also made quiet plain shots much more interesting to look at.

They have also use the animation in the video to represent the lyrics and instrumental in the song, this is a very interesting thing to do because the animation have been used throughout the video and have turned out to be very affective.

Mise En Scene

The Mise En Scene in this video is again typical of most music video's I say this because even though the songs itself isn't that dark lyrically, the video itself has again a dark black and white look to it in order to match the animation.

The contrast of black and white throughout the video helps the animation used stand out and have a more impressionable, dominant effect in the video. This is because most of our attention is set on the animation because it was used cleverly and it has been used to replace some of the instruments as a more entertaining and different way of showing the instruments in the video.

Editing

This video was probably a very difficult video to edit since they had to incorporate the animations into the video. Furthermore the animations were used sometimes in the video to replace the actual artists.

There were also the convention fast pace cutting through shots as certain points in the video, however were the animations were there was just animations in the shots they were of a longer length. They were able to do this because it is unusual to have animations in the video so the length  of the shots didn't really matter.

Sound

The sound of this song is very commercial, I say this because like some other rock songs this song could have qualified for other genres. I say this because it has elements of other genre in it like certain parts where he seems as though he is rapping.

However the song is very 'Rock' still and this is obvious through the lyrics of the song through the hook. It is very unique and usual something that people find in rock music video quiet a lot. Also because of the backing instrumental is primarily 'Rock' this is shown through the drums and guitars that make up the beat.

Performance

The performance of the and in this shot need to be on perfect because the video mainly revolves around them so they need to act as though they are performing live to make sure it is entertaining enough for anyone who watches the video.

The performance of the band it also made to look better because of the animation that is used throughout the video to add a new effect and feel to the video.

Video 5

30 Seconds To Mars - Hurricane Ft Kanye West

Cinematography

This video has also used the typical a variety of shots throughout the video, and again it has the typical dark lighting in order to appeal to the listeners and viewers of the song of the video.

This video in particular has also used the random shots of things that someone may not consider to be a relevant of the video, however there are many deeper meaning throughout this video, this is seen through the story of the video.

Mise En Scene

Mise En Scene in this video is very unique, this is due to the amount of acting and cut aways that take place through out the video. There are various different random shots that are being used and many of them have meanings they just aren't apparent what they are.

There is also the dark feel throughout the video again this is something that we see commonly in most rock music video's of this genre, although I think in this video i think the darkness is used to add to the drama throughout out the video.

Editing

The editing in this song isn't always fast like most other music video as a whole. The pace of cutting between shots is slow and this is due to the acting that is done throughout the video, also there is not much lip synching in the video because of the acting as well.

However there are certain point of the video that do have lip synching in them but that is only small parts of the video.

Sound

The sound of this video is again a commercial sound. I say this because the band have got an artist named 'Kanye West' who mainly does rap music to bring another feel to the song, in addition to this he was used so his fan base would listen to song and give it more publicity that it normally wouldn't have gotten. So this song like other rock songs may be able to qualify to be placed in other genres.

However the sound of the song is extremely 'Rock' in certain aspects like the singing. In this video the lyrics are sung and shouted throughout the video which gives it the 'Rock' feel to the song. However the instrumental used isn't always the traditional sound because there are not always drums or guitars playing in the song.

Performance

The performance of the artists in this video is top quality this is due to the fact that in the video they are doing more acting than they are performing to song in a more traditional way, with the instruments in shot ECT.

I think that the acting in this video is another way of reducing viewer fatigue, and a good way of keeping fans interested and excited for what the bands videos can bring to table.

Mood Board

This is basically a mood board about the things that people would find in most rock music video's. As  you can see overall Mise En Scene of the mood board is very dark, this is because in most 'Rock' music video's dark lighting and dark colouring to shots is often used because darkness appeals to the audience that listen to 'Rock'.

As you can see there is a variety of shots that are in this mood board this is typical of most music video's they use different shots to make the video more interesting. Another way of making a video interesting is the use of animation which I have show quiet a lot throughout the mood board.

Bordwell and Thompson

What is editing?

"Editing is a way of going from one shot to another".

The above quote explains editing and shows how simple it actually is, one shot after another and each shot creates meaning in own for example look at these pictures.

Look at the picture and think about what the person is thinking?

Shot 1                                          followed by             Shot 2

Is it the man's birthday?

Shot 1                                                  followed by                                    Shot 2

This man just got a bad Grade in his exam?

The point is that people who edit videos put certain shots after each other and each shot is significant, because editing creates meaning. Further more there are various other things going on when editing is taking place in a music video or even films.  This technique is called the 'Kuleshov' effect, mainly in Hollywood film editing Bordwell and Thompson noticed that shots could be linked in different way and they were Graphic, spatial, temporal and rhythmic

Graphic

Shots can linked 'Graphically' and they are linked through their individual 'pictorial Quailaties'. This could consists of a particular shape, colour, theme, movement ECT.  This can be used for various reason one may be to create smooth continuity or for shots to contrast against each other.

  • Graphic Match: Shots link through graphic similarities. E.G Shape
  • Graphic Continuity: This is where the centre of interest in constant throughout out cuts E>G Same level of lighting
  • Graphic Discontinuity: Contrast between colour  and footage types E.G Shot of moving vehicle followed by a shot of a stationary vehicle

Spatial

Spatial editing is mainly concern films and how shots match through the elements they have in them even if they are similar or differences in the shots both can be used to create meaning and develop the video.

  • Continuity Editing: This produces 'space' because it is likely that there is a narrative in the scene so there will probably be an Establishing shot followed by a mid shot or close up. this gives the audience a sense of space.
  • Kuleshov effect: Only certain shots will be shots will be shown of a single location, and even by only seeing portions of the setting the audience will be able to guess how much space there i.
  • Crosscutting: Crosscutting is editing constantly between two shots to and this emphasizes both of the shots as a whole.
Temporal

This is the time within the film. Time can be edited to be quicker for the audiences purposes that how we can fit a film that is based over year in a 2 hour production. Time can be manipulated E.G A man getting a plane and flying to different countries within 5 minutes in a film. For Example:

The above could be enough for an audience to know that someone as got on a plane and is now in another country, and that could be shown within a minute of filming.

Rhythmic

Rhythmic editing is basically editing at a particular tempo, to create feeling in a scene an example of this would be if editing between shots gets increasingly faster that in turn builds tension in the scene and the audience or maybe in a music video to match the pace, song and mood of the music. Here is an Example of rhythmic editing.

Look at the first 45 seconds of this music video and it shows how rhythmic editing can be used in order to match the pace, sound and mood of music video.
