Analysis of Rock Videos 1

The first Rock video that I am going to analyse is 'kings of Leon - Use somebody'.



PERFORMANCE:

In rock songs the performance of the artist in the song is usually different to pop songs, this is because people who do rock are normally in bands so the performance from the people singing the song is usually in band format. Also in this particular video there are a lot of cut aways of random stuff like the motor and the artists them selves doing random things.


EDITING:

The editing in this video is much different to other videos I say this because unlike most other music video there is a mixture of short sharp editing and also long shots. Also there are a lot of cuts aways of the band performing the song in front of big crowds, with the lip syncing accurate and also other random cuts aways. I think there is also a story being told throughout the video as well of a man and a women which is relevant to the concept of the song.

CINEMATOGRAPHY:

The cinematography in this video is used very cleverly, I say this because some of the shots that are used are there to make up for the length of certain shots, and also there are extreme long shots of the high way used as cuts away maybe to make up for the lack of footage the people who made the video had to use or just to add to the type of video that the film makers were trying to create.

MISE EN SCENE:

The audience of people who generally listen to rock music is different from those who listen to pop. Rock music fans are normally more dark, more Gothic and rock bands have been in that type of culture for many years. As you can see this video is quiet dark throughout with some exception but this is something that rock video do a lot of because the audience of people who normally listen to that genre of music can relate to that. There is a lot of black and white used throughout the video also this may be to make shots that weren't interesting that much better to look at.

SOUND:

The sound of this song is very slow, meaningful and passionate, this is just one of the types of rocks song that there are others may be very fast pace, loud and brutal. This video suits the type of song it is and does this through the shot lengths mimicking the song by having long shots in certain places. This song however is one of those rock songs that people that mainly listen to other music genres would like because it has certain elements that reach out to any one that hear it and also the concept is a very general concept so people can relate to it.
